Nutrien: Enhancing UI consistency to improve quality
Human-Centered Design

The Challenge

Nutrien faced significant challenges with User Interface consistency in one of their production applications. Despite designers creating detailed interfaces, small but crucial UI elements were often overlooked during development and QA stages. This lack of alignment resulted in a final product that appeared inconsistent and unpolished, impacting both user experience and brand perception.

Without checkpoints to ensure fidelity to the original designs, the process lacked the necessary oversight to catch these issues early, leading to rework and inefficiencies across the team.

The Solution

To address these UI consistency challenges, Dura Digital’s HCD team collaborated closely with Nutrien’s development and QA teams to uncover the root causes of missed details. They found that QA testers were unclear on what specific UI elements to check from a design perspective and that both, the development and QA teams, lacked familiarity with Figma’s design specifications, limiting their ability to accurately interpret design files.

Dura Digital implemented a multi-faceted approach to bridge these gaps:

QA Checklist

A comprehensive checklist outlining all essential design attributes for QA to verify during testing, ensuring that visual details align with design intentions.

Bi-Weekly UI Demos

Regular demos led by the development team and attended by designers, enabling early design reviews and feedback on UI details as features are built. This astep provides an additional checkpoint to catch inconsistencies before they reach production.

Figma Training Sessions

Dedicated information sessions for both development and QA teams on how to effectively navigate Figma to locate necessary specifications, accompanied by a reference file for ongoing support.

These targeted interventions equipped the teams with the knowledge, tools, and checkpoints needed to maintain UI fidelity throughout the development cycle.

The Results

The project led to a significant increase in attention to UI detail across all team members, resulting in reduced time and effort spent by developers and QA on addressing UI defects.

This substantial reduction in UI defects demonstrates the effectiveness of targeted education, improved collaboration, and clearer communication.By empowering teams with the right knowledge and tools, Nutrien’s product development process became more efficient, saving both time and resources while delivering a polished, consistent UI.
